Catalog Entry from If These Walls Could Talk Exhibit, Neill-Cochran House 2020:
I guess it is fitting that when I unpacked this piece for If These Walls Could Talk, there was a new broken part: my rendition of Monet’s Impression: Sunrise. This piece is all about brokenness, the fragmentation of our world, and our own personal griefs. Yet, in its title, there is hope. Morning is Broken is a favorite hymn, and this is one of my bad puns. Chlora first encounters this trumpet at a sunrise Easter service on a mountaintop. It was an ecumenical service but the organizers apparently were unaware that Jesus told us not to toot our own horns when we pray. And he’d said that during his Sermon on the Mount, so you’d think that people would remember that, while up here having their mountaintop experiences. Later the trumpeter appears in a church service and Chlora tries to mimic him in the Easter parade, where she learns that justice isn’t just about you.
