Slipping and sliding, this mountain of books represents the bounty of the Chrysostom Society, which meets annually at Laity Lodge. Their patron, “St. John Chrysostom,” is depicted on the library lamp in the center, overseeing the spill of creativity. Here, as in real life, books are objects to be admired, but better yet, to be used. In this digital age, this sculpture reminds us that pages, ink and bindings are matter… and in the world of the incarnation, matter matters. Some of these authors have become well known, and when asked which of their own books is their personal favorite, their replies were not the titles they are known for, but a recent work that “took it all out of me.” (Artist’s note from 2014)
